I’ve made shitloads of mistakes in my life. Who hasn’t?
And I’m quite confident in saying that I’ll make tons more. Who won’t?
I wouldn’t say that I’m looking forward to facing them. But by any means, I plan to get all the learning I can out of them.
Call it naivety, lack of experience, the fire of youth…
Some happened in my professional life, some throughout my education, some through my sentimental life, some through my relationships…
Some of them were frustrating, some of them were confusing, some of them made me angry, some of them were painful, some of them made me cry…
But it’s okay. You are allowed to do mistakes in life. We get a nearly unlimited set of do-overs. The only bad mistake is the one we don’t learn from, the one we keep making.
“Success does not consist in never making mistakes but in never making the same one a second time.” - George B. Shaw
Some beautiful things come from mistakes:
- In tech: agile mindset and the concept of iteration
- In politics: peace treaties amongst nations
- In medicine: better medication after terrible side effects of prior solution
- In art: Jackson Pollock
- In science: the theory of relativity
Play-Doh, Penicillin, Corn Flakes, all born from one type of mistake or another.
Now, when I make a mistake, it makes me smirk. My internal voice teases me at how stupid I was to make it. But hey… one thing that I know of sure, is that I’ll do whatever I can to not replicate it, to learn and grow and heal.
If you don’t make mistakes, you don’t live. You stay in your comfort zone; you don’t expose yourself to experiences, to that mysterious unknown where all creative magic of life begins. In minimising the risks to an absolute zero, you might reach a level of unprecedented avoidance in your life. But wouldn’t that be the biggest mistake you could make?
“If no mistake you have made, yet losing you are. A different game you should play.” - Yoda
